Stop chasing compliance and start building skills (and regulation)!!

This workshop-style training is intended for educators – administrators, classroom teachers, school counselors, educational assistants, etc.

Participants will experience a combination of didactic instruction, visuals, and examples, followed by hands-on creation of a plan to take back to their particular setting to implement with students who struggle due to trauma impacts or other causes of chronic challenging behavior.

As a BCBA, I came into this training hesitant on the content I was about to listen in on, and about 35 minutes into this training, I became enthralled with the materials, intrigued with the neural pathways of how the brain operates under stress and learning the ideas of “tweaking” of past and present protocols to encompass this new approach to supporting students. I recommend this training to all school staff, & actually anyone working with humans to attend, and in fact this can be a great onboard training. To my surprise I thoroughly enjoyed all the material presented.

What’s to be gained through training on this Trauma-Informed FBA?

  • Approaches for looking deeper, beyond what a child is trying to “get or avoid”, to assess the underlying skills that need to be built

  • Comparisons of how brain-based, skill-focused FBA’s & BSP’s more effectively address the impacts of trauma than traditional models
  • Processes to assess and plan proactive regulation as part of a plan to help a child become more accessible for intervention

  • Strategies for intervention components of the FBA and BSP to ensure that the brain can tolerate and grow from the experience

  • Application of how to take the information learned and create successful and effective Behavior Support Plans

I was so excited to stumble upon this training…. the title alone drove my excitement! (I was literally googling Trauma Informed BIP’s for help) I’ve spent the first half of the year trying to get people to understand that a typical FBA and BIP is not a magic wand for students affected by trauma. Typical function of behavior does not apply. It was wonderful to spend my Saturday learning from you.

Who can benefit from Trauma-Informed FBA?

Other benefits gained from this Trauma-Informed FBA training:

  • Increase Understanding of Childhood Trauma – Increase understanding of how trauma impacts brain and nervous system development and functioning, and how this shows up in the school setting.

  • Embed Social Emotional Learning – Move beyond a canned SEL lesson to an embedded model of social emotional learning that fosters the capacity to build relationships, respond to dysregulation and escalation, and advocate for humane and compassionate care for both students and staff.

  • Promote Educator & Student Resilience – Build practices that promote educator and student resilience to meet the social and emotional demands of their lives in all areas, and to experience optimal physical and emotional wellness.

  • Incorporate Trauma-Informed & Equity Work – Examine the intersection of trauma-informed and equity work in how Behavior Support Plans are created and implemented for students in schools.

This training was so helpful as a behavior specialist who conducts FBAs and writes BSPs! It took the idea of “trauma informed practices” and gave me concrete ideas (and the rationale behind using them) to incorporate into my FBA process.
